It is\u00a0first\u00a0built\u00a0in 970 AD in the\u00a0Northern Song\u00a0dynasty\u00a0(960-1127),\u00a0in\u00a0a\u00a0way\u00a0to press\u00a0down\u00a0the\u00a0evil\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0river\u00a0tidal \u00a0bore\u00a0in\u00a0Qiantang\u00a0River. The\u00a0name\u00a0of the pagoda\u00a0is\u00a0related to\u00a0six\u00a0codes\u00a0of\u00a0Buddhism. Six\u00a0harmonies mean the\u00a0harmonies\u00a0of\u00a0body,\u00a0mind\u00a0speech,\u00a0opinion,\u00a0wealth\u00a0and\u00a0abstinence\u00a0from\u00a0temptation.\u00a0When\u00a0you\u00a0climb\u00a0 to the\u00a0first\u00a0floor,\u00a0you\u00a0will\u00a0attain\u00a0the\u00a0harmony\u00a0of\u00a0body; the\u00a0second\u00a0floor,\u00a0the\u00a0harmony of\u00a0mind;\u00a0and\u00a0so\u00a0on.<br \/>\nAnother explanation goes that the &#8221;six harmonies&#8221; comes from the six buddhist ordinances, meaning &#8221;haarmonies of the heaven, earth, east, west, south and north&#8221;. The pagaoda has fallen into ruins and gone through reconstruction many times. The original pagoda is nine storied with the tip, serving as a navigation tower in the river. The present tower was the restoration in 1156.<br \/>\nSeen from outside, the tower, with a height of 59.89 meters, have 13 stories while in fact only seven stories in side. The core of the present pagoda was built with the bricks left over from the southern Song Dynasty. The upturned wooden multieaves and wrapping structure were first built in the ending years of the Qing Dynasty and have been refurbished many times. Commanding a spectular view of surging Qiantang River, the pagoda presents a quiet image of age-old majesty.
