Starbucks Coffee Costume Hat Tutorial
If you’re like me and waiting till the last minute to do a Halloween costume AND are a huge Starbucks fan, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s a quick tutorial showing how to DIY the hat for this cute Starbucks coffee costume! There’s a video below as well.

I originally saw this idea from Amy Latta Creations on Pinterest. I wanted to make something similar, but with more whip cream! So when I was at Joann’s later in the day, I grabbed some stuff I thought would work, and put the hat together in about 30 minutes!
If you’re interested in the whole outfit, I used the Dearcase Women’s Irregular Hem Flowy T-Shirt dress from Amazon, and downloaded a Starbucks logo SVG from the internet. I used my Cricut to cut the logo out, and my Cricut Easy Press 2 [affiliate link] to apply it to the dress!
As a side note, this was the first project I did with my Easy Press, and I LOVE IT. I will be doing tutorials on it soon!
I also got a second white boa (not shown in the picture) to wrap around my neck for more feathery-whip-cream fun!
The supplies and instructions are below, and at the bottom is a video to illustrate the steps. I’d love to see what you create if you make this! Have fun!
Supplies
- 1 9”x12” Pirate Green Kunin Classic Felt [affiliate link] (not too thick or stiff)
- 1 3.9″x7.9″ styrofoam half-ball [affiliate link] (you can find this at Amazon or in the floral section of Joanns or another craft store)
- 1 9.5” styrofoam ring [affiliate link] (also on Amazon or the floral section of Joanns or another craft store)
- 3 toilet paper rolls or 1 paper towel roll
- Low-temp glue gun [affiliate link] (need low temp because of the styrofoam). This one comes with 10 glue sticks, but if you need more, these will work.
- 1 6 foot white turkey feather craft boa [affiliate link] (doesn’t have to be best quality)
I recommend laying down a towel to protect your surface, and a paper towel to catch any drips from your glue gun.
Make sure to use a Low Temp Glue Gun! The higher temp glue guns will melt the styrofoam.
Instructions
- Put a line of hot glue around the outer edge of the half ball.
- Center the half ball on top of the ring. Work quickly as the glue hardens fast!
- To add additional security, glue around the outside where the half ball and ring meet.
- If you’re using toilet paper rolls, cut a small slice in the bottom of each. This will let you overlap the edges of the cut in order to insert the end of one roll into the un-cut end of another. Once you have it fit, remove a roll, add some glue at the end that you’re inserting into the other roll, and put it back.
- You should have a tube about 10” long when you’re done. It doesn’t need to be exact.
- If you’re using a paper towel roll, just make sure it’s not longer than 10”.
- Add some glue to the 12” edge of the felt.
- Position the tube on the glue line, leaving about an inch of felt free at either end.
- Roll the felt starting at the glue line, around the toilet paper/paper towel roll tube.
- When you reach the end, add more glue to the free edge of the felt, and roll it a few times to set it.
- In one end, add glue along the free edge of the felt and tuck it inside the tube.
- In the other end, cut flaps about ½” long around the free edge of the felt.
- Place the “straw” on the half sphere, flaps down and spread out, away from the tube.
- These will be glued down and hold the straw on the hat. I put mine kind of towards the back so it would slant backwards a little bit.
- I also positioned the seam in the felt to be facing towards the back of the hat.
- Glue each of the flaps to the top of the sphere.
- Attach the boa to the hat, starting at the rim and working your way around.
- There may be a fiber end that you can glue down first. If so, glue that in back by the seam.
- When gluing the boa, you can lay down some glue, then press the fiber core of the boa into the glue.
- When you reach the end, tuck the end (if any) among the other feathers to hide it.
- If you want, you can add a chin strap of elastic by gluing each end to either side of the inside of the styrofoam ring.
You’re done!
I hope you enjoyed this DIY Starbucks costume tutorial! Here’s a video to help illustrate the steps. If you make this, I’d love to see it!
